Every Story has a beginning, this one is still fresh in my
mind. Joe and I were taking a road trip to check out The Spring Arts
Festival in Gainesville, Florida. It was March of 1980 and I was a Sophomore Arts
Major at Valdosta State College one hundred miles north of Gainesville. I
wanted to see the quality of the show with hopes of applying the following year. We had seen a number of booths containing beautiful watercolors, sculpture,
weaving and of course tons of pottery. Then we came to Lumps booth.
That is how the artist referred to himself. His booth was filled with
faces, large statues of clay creations, thrown bowls with clay people, and face
mugs. I was forever transfixed. I purchased the mug below and thus
the story begins.

March 1980
This is the first Face mug I ever saw. It was created by
LUMP. I purchased it Immediately for $25. That was 1980. I saw
him three years later and he was asking $40 for his mugs and selling very
large Conan the barbarian type statues for $325.00. The last time I saw him
at a show, he was no longer doing mugs.

Later 1980
I thought the face mug was the coolest thing in the
world and could not wait to show it to my pottery professor. He was
not impressed and forbid me to WASTE any of my pots with this crap! I
was able to make two kiln gods that sit on top of a kiln while it is firing
and protect the contents from evil spirits. They were later salt
glazed and my first Roxx were formed |

1988
After college, I worked in a restaurant and only piddled
with faces from time to time. I did make some face mugs but gave most of my
work from that time away. these are the earliest I have left

1991
I had been working with K-Mart for three years now. My job
was to travel and open new stores or remodel old ones. I spent 49 weeks a
year in a motel from Miami, Florida to Detroit, Michigan. I some how
found time to play with clay, though very little

1994
I was now engaged to be married and needed to do
something productive to fill my Nighttime. I was thinking of doing a
football chess set when I came up with these little critters. The
chess set is still in my mind and one day will be a reality. |

1995
I have always been
fascinated with series and collectables and decided to make one myself.
Christmas seems to be a collectable theme that most people can relate to, so
I created the Santa Stonzz. These are the original three
Artists Proofs. In printing, Artist Proof are the first prints that
are run before the series is printed. In clay, they are more of an
experiment to see how the item looks before making a final decision on the
series. |
 |
|
1995
The 1995 Santa Stonzz
were limited to only 95 pieces. being a new item and made solid not hollow,
some did not make it through the firing process and were never remade. Many
were given as gifts to family and friends and some were sold. at this time
there may be one or two still available for the original price of
$25.00 please inquire.

1995
The Dread Roxx......This one was a dozy. Long
story....short. I am a big Reggae Music Fan, Cherri and I went to Jamaica to
the Reggae Sun splash (a 6-day all night long concert) in 1992. In
honor of my obsession, I decided to create 1,000 Individually numbered Dread
Roxx, advertise them in The Beat Magazine and make a cool $25,000.
I made some where around 800, many were destroyed because of the dreads
falling off, ran my ad and NOTHING. The short lesson, as an artist when its
personal, keep it that way. I still have many of these available for a
reduced price of $10.00 while I eat crow. |

1995
The Tennessee Fan Stonzz.
Living in Knoxville and my wife being an Alumni of the BIG ORANGE, this
one was a no brainer. I do not remember what the series was suppose to be
limited to, I think it was 1,000. But after the above fiasco, I
learned to make them as they sold. I believe I made over 100, but not many
more. I really liked this approach, because unlike the Santa's & Dreads,
these could be as different and crazy as I wanted. Each one was an
individual expression of how I was feeling at the time. all left overs are
in my personal collection.......sorry! |

1995
Growing up In Valdosta
Ga., I was only 70 miles from Tallahassee, Florida and the Florida
State Seminoles, so naturally when it comes to College football, this is my
team. I only made a few Seminole Stonzz and they were never in
a series. Many are in private collections and I own several myself. |

1996
The 1996 Santa Stonzz
were limited to a series of 500, with the first 100 having a lighter green
hat as shown in the picture. These were marketed through a picture
postcard campaign. I think I only made 300 or so of these and I may
still have a few left for the reduced price of $20 each. email me at the
link at the bottom of the page if interested. |

1996
The Tennessee Santa Stonzz.
A limited edition Stonzz that sold out. I can make these to depict most
schools as long as you are not to strict on lettering or color. email me
with questions
$25.00 |

1996
Racing Roxx, I only made
a few of these as I have to actually carve the number into plaster to make a
stamp to stamp into the hats. Gordon and Earnhardt are the only two I have
done. I may have one of each available but would have to dig them out
$25.00 each
Sold Out Available by order only |

1997
Egg Heads, I had a plaster mold that I had
acquired and decided to give these a try. I make the face and then press it
into one side of the mold, back it with clay and press more clay into the
other side of the mold. press both sides together and WAM! they usually
split in half in the firing....so much for spare time. None are
available at this time but I would attempt it again if interested
$15.00 each |

1997
1997 Santa Stonzz, limited to 197 pieces, this is
possibly the best I will ever do. It represents the first Red Hat Santa as
well as an excellent use of stains in the package. I mixed up the white clay
with yellow and blue stains (separately of course) and formed the package
with a blue ribbon. It is also the first time I used a hand. I am not sure
at this moment if any of these remain. It is still a steal at $35.00 if they
do.

2000
The 2000 Santa Stonzz.
were limited to 200 pieces, each individually numbered. I did not make it
through the series. I do not remember reaching much more than 100.
This is the first and only Stonzz made in a series since moving to Sparta in
1999. I still have a few available at this time for $20.00 |

2005
I have not made a Santa
Stonzz in 5 years now. It is however the 10th Anniversary of all this
madness and I am compelled to honor it. I am thinking of a limited edition
of 105 pieces and doing a solid white piece to resemble my original Artist
Proof Stonzz. Interested.....email me as I already have a waiting list
that is 5 years old $25.00 Each |
